Origins of Pizza Margherita

Margherita pizza was invented in 1889 by Neapolitan pizza maker Raffaele Esposito to celebrate when Italy’s Queen Margherita visited Naples with then-king Umberto I. Of the several pizzas Esposito had made for the Queen, the one with tomato, mozzarella, and basil was her favorite. In her honor, this pizza was named Margherita.
